A visit to Shingle Street

shingle Street beach sits South of Orford at the tip of Orford Ness. It’s an often deserted, wild Suffolk beach. Backed by just a single line of white houses and bungalows. And it’s a pretty special place.

Follow the shell line up across the shingle. Made from over 20,000 white whelk shells it captures an inspiring story of two friends both diagnosed with cancer over 15 years ago who started the line on a trip together to Suffolk. They found the Suffolk coast to be such a healing place for them both and agreed to meet there every 6 months to repair and continue the line. But found that others had done so for them. Creating a beautiful symbol of friendship, courage and survival.

Perhaps different from your usual day at the beach, our favourite reason to come here, apart from the escapism and solitude…is for the beachcoming.

Coming home with a collection of treasure, shells, sea glass and driftwood are all favourite finds. But you can also find beautiful, dried sea kale and dried teasel to decorate the home.
